Phonological Theory

from

In 20202021, in response to the Covid-19 crisis, I am teaching on this course as part of a team that also includes Patrick Honeybone, Benjamin Molineaux, and Laura Arnold. I will teach a block that includes the following topics:

  • Basics of phonological theory: contrast, phonemes, allophones, alternations
  • Feature theory
  • Derivations, underlying representations, rules
  • Process interaction and rule ordering

Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on building data analysis and problem solving skills. The course will also cover topics relevant to the phonology of English.

This course is also offered for MSc students (as LASC11148). It is suitable for postgraduate students who have had some previous exposure to phonology.

See LASC10088 on DRPS.
