In this talk I suggest that some cases of the historical extension of initial mutation in Welsh to some contexts where they are not explainable with reference to sandhi in Proto-Brythonic, such as the ‘direct object mutation’, may have been driven by the interpretation of lenition (‘soft mutation’) as a non-prototypicality marker.
